Rogério Botter Maio & Fábio Leandro
– Duo –
For over fifteen years, the double bassist and pianist have worked together in different formations of Rogério (on his three most recent albums, trio, quintet, nonet, Buenos Aires Festivals, Garanhuns, two performances at Sesc Brasil Instrumental, etc.). Both are arrangers and composers, with extensive activity in Brazil and abroad. In this presentation they will bring works from Botter Maio’s albums and arrangements of our popular songbook.
This trio performs original compositions drawn from Rogério´s seven albums released to date. His music blends a wide range of Brazilian rhythms with jazz language, South American influences, and sounds from other parts of the world.
The repertoire also includes creative reinterpretations of Brazilian standards, bringing fresh arrangements and improvisational depth to the music.
With a few different lineups Rogério has presented his work at international jazz festivals such as the Indonesia Open (Jakarta), festivals in Buenos Aires and La Plata (Argentina), and in Italy at Siena Jazz and the Serravalle Jazz Festival. He has also performed at renowned jazz venues including Moods and Bird’s Eye (Switzerland), Jamboree (Barcelona), Casa del Jazz (Rome), and La Bilbaína (Spain), among others.

Por um triz – Rogerio Botter Maio – Brazil – March 2019
Nonet0o9
The lineup of this new project is inspired by the legendary album “Birth of the Cool” (Gil Evans & Miles Davis).
The nine piece band comprises of trumpet (or oboe), alto sax (and flute), baritone sax (and clarinet), French horn, trombone, tuba, piano, acoustic bass and drums.
All the arrangements and eight of the eleven compositions were written by Botter Maio, bass player of the ensemble.
The other three compositions in the concert are Brazilian standards written by three major composers (Tom Jobim, Baden Powell and Dorival Caymmi).
In order to make this project feasible in another country, there will be six local musicians playing woodwinds and horns added to the all Brazilian core trio (consisting of piano, acoustic bass and drums).
When connected to music institutions, the preparation can be connected with Rogério´s workshop “Brazilian music RHYTHM SECTION APPROACH and MELODIC INTERPRETATION”.

RHYTHM SECTION APPROACH & MELODIC INTERPRETATION
For all instruments as well as singers
About the workshop
This is an interactive workshop, where the students will develop a better understanding of the rhythm approach to Brazilian music.
They will experience and feel the Brazilian “swing” by playing their primary instrument (whether melodic or from the rhythm section) or singing.
The students will also be exposed to playing easy patterns on a secondary instrument (i.e. percussion) in order to understand better the interaction between the rhythm section and the melody on this style.
The workshop will present the following:
- Musical examples of a wide variety of Rhythms such as Samba (in 2/4, 3/4 and in 7/8), Frevo, Afoxé, Maracatu, Baião and related rhythms/styles (Maracatu, Xaxado, Forró, etc.).
- Basic rhythmic motifs and patterns among the rhythm section instruments
- The different melodic approach among the various styles.
- Brief review of some historical aspects (Choro, Bossa Nova, Carnival samba-batucada and northeastern Brazilian music).
